Video: Het verhaal van de enige twee Bugatti EB110 racers

Het verhaal achter de Bugatti EB110 is minstens zo uniek als zijn ontstaan, zijn technische lay-out en uiterlijk. Maar wist je dat de vierwielaangedreven supercar ook geracet heeft?

Dankzij de knappe mini-docu van collega Davide Cironi kom je het verhaal te weten achter twee unieke en misschien wel de meest bijzondere EB110’s van allemaal. Voormalig Bugatti CEO Romano Artioli vond het maar evident voor een merk als Bugatti dat er ook geracet zou worden en gaf daarom opdracht aan zijn ingenieurs een versie voor Le Mans in elkaar te zetten, net als een versie voor het Amerikaanse IMSA GT-kampioenschap.

Zowel de EB110 LM als de EB110 SC GTS-1 zouden vanwege een heleboel redenen nooit het volledig potentieel kunnen tonen. Maar de verhalen achter beide auto’s zijn daarom niet minder boeiend.

Het was de huidige eigenaar van beide auto’s zelf die Circoni inviteerde voor een uitvoerige ontmoeting met beide auto’s, maar ook met ex-Bugatti testrijder Loris Bicocchi en designer Giampaolo Benedini. Samen met andere sleutelfiguren zoals Romano Artioli, Giampaolo Simonini, Fabio Baroni en Vittorio Filippini vertellen ze je het verhaal achter de totstandkoming van beide auto’s.

Zelf heeft Cironi er nog het volgende over te vertellen:

“The owner of the two racing cars contacted me a year ago, inviting me to visit him to make this film, and we were picked up at the airport by what I assumed was a lowly assistant. But no, it was the owner himself driving the van, one of the world’s most passionate collectors.

Within a few hours, an astonishing series of guests began to arrive on various flights from across Italy: there was Loris Bicocchi, Romano Artioli and Giampaolo Benedini, plus Giampaolo Simonini, Fabio Baroni and Vittorio Filippini – the latter a technician so in love with his work that it was almost poetic.

What a gift for a film-maker. We learnt so much, and laughed so much, especially the mechanic Fabio Baroni who, when recalling the challenge of working with Bicocchi to test the cars, doubled over with laughter at the colourful and compelling memories. Even after 20 years, there is a team spirit among these men that gives a powerful flavour of the atmosphere as it must have been in Bugatti Automobili at Campogalliano.

We had two short days with these wonderful men, telling their unprecedented story of that magical, never-to-be-repeated time, and now the documentary is ready and we want to share it with as many enthusiasts as possible.”
